Hello!

This is a picture of the night of the 5th march 2011... A night spent under the stars on the summit of the Brevent in the Chamonix valley in french Alps...
We were front of the Mont Blanc, the highest summit of the Alps, an amazing scenery.
The mountains remains enlighted by the lights of the town in the valley, giving a really particular athmosphere.
The sky was amazingly clear, only the summit of the Mont Blanc was clouds covered.

A great remember

Canon EOS 5D mkII - EF 17-40 - tripod - 30sec @ f4 and 1600iso - headlight for the tent lighting :)

Another night in Paradise by *XavierJamonet ( Featured by `Anoya )

There are myriad quotes in the world of photography that deal with art of a photographer being, at its basest, the capture of light. In 'Another Night in Paradise', Xavier Jamonet has laid the perfect trap and captured a real trophy. Great photography comes in two forms, the first of which is mastery of 'the art'; that photographer who can make a stack of bills look good. The other comes from opportunity; that photographer who finds himself at that certain point in space and time when the light and scenery is 'just so'. 'Another Night in Paradise' is that rare marriage of both these things. Xavier Jamonet has earned this photograph, the art of this capture speaks of years of dedication to his craft; but moreover, he has voyaged to one of the least hospitable places on the globe to gain it. In the end he has managed to find color in a dark and largely colorless place and has left the viewer feeling welcome in a place where human beings do not belong.

I came across this picture through a link by my friend Markus DS. Thanks man - this made my day!

It has many levels for me and this critique is a personal response to the composition and subject matter. The technical principle I understand and has been extremely well executed.

The result is a drama of contrasts, both tonal and atmospheric. The depth and intensity of the shadow tones allow a beautiful "slow reveal" of the footprints in the snow and point accents on the rock to the right.

The glow of the yellow tent intensifies the longer you look at it due to the complimentary after image colour of the blue violet in the surrounding snow "bleeding" back up into the structure.

The immense scale of the distant mountians and associated cloud structures comes through really well - and then we get to the breathtaking starfield.

The "sky" is deeper than the bluest Lapis on a Russian Icon. It shows the abyssal gulf of space and is such a wonderful piece of evidence that we live on a planet.

A superb piece of work. You have seen from the top of this world into infinity.
