Explosion by XavierJamonet Explosion by XavierJamonet
Long exposure at dusk, over a small lake in the Cerces mountains, in French Alps. The clouds were moving in my direction pushed by a strong wind, creating this impression of movement with the long exposure.

Canon 5DmkII - EF17-40 - Tripod - nd Grad Lee

Yeah it is in my budget, I'm talking about the 17-40 compared to the 16-35. 5D2 is out of my budget, but with a little luck I get this grant ;)

Well if you don't want to do astrophotography and you aren't too bothered about having the pinwheel type sunstars that the 16-35 produces then really you are just looking at a very slight sharpness difference for twice the price. Probably not worth it at the stage you're at in my opinion. It's an upgrade I will probably make a way into the future though :)If you really care you could look at the Canon MTF charts for the two lenses. Oh and the 17-40 deals with flare better :)

Wicked shot. The clouds streaking towards you gives a nice spin on movement in the sky compared to the norm. The reflection is the only thing that puzzles me? I would have expected it to be a near mirror image of the land above. Very peculiar. Other than that, the lighting is fantastic and give a great sense of chilly evening in the high country. Keep up the great work b/c I know you will.

Oh, one quick question. What is the color cast rating on your lee filter?

Very dramatic Xavier, I love it :)

I do notice some strange distortion in the reflection though, like the reflection is smaller than the mountains themselves? This shows what I mean...
[link]

I guess that must be lens distortion but its quite a lot! Originally it made me feel like the image was on a tilt. Its a minor point though really, 99% of people probably wouldn't notice.
